ECF Day 2 - Creative Entrepreneurship & Social Impact

Sunday 17th February 2019
Today was the first full day in The Netherlands, and it was a packed day. The day kicked off with a tour in the TivioliVredenburg and my goodness what a building. The architecture was phenomenal, and the design was complicated. The theatre itself is a "breeding ground for artists and cultural organizations." The advice that I took away from this tour was;

"Be creative"
"Be innovative"
"Take advantage of social development"
"Think business"

We were briefly introduced to cultural entrepreneurship. According to Google, "Cultural Entrepreneurs are cultural change agents and resourceful visionaries who organize cultural, financial, social and human capital, to generative revenue from cultural activity." The tour guide said that from 2016, "art and culture became part of a political agenda" and was used for "education." Outside the theatre, there was a massive whale sculpture made out of plastic. Art is one of my hobbies, and I like to work with mixed media such as paint, watercolours, collage and photography. This tour and sculpture have opened my eyes to using art and media as a way to promote awareness about environmental or social issues. Art can have an impact on someone and inspire them.  This whale sculpture made me highly aware of the amount of plastic waste there is. The hostel we are staying at has colourful plastic wall art and small stools made out of plastic.

Workshop: Composing for film: analyzing music and sound interactively as synergistic layers in film. By Robin Assen.

In this workshop, Robin showed us the first ten minutes of The Shawshank Redemption. I absolutely love this movie and have seen it at least 20 times. He asked us to take note of the music changes in this short clip. My conclusion is that it is an extremely complicated scene for both the editing team and the sound editors. The layers in the piece overlap perfectly, but it must have taken ages to complete. One thing I took away from this talk, is that music is subtle and shouldn't distract the user from the dialogue. Usually, the volume in music dips when someone is talking and increases when there is no dialogue. As a film director, I have mainly focused on the visual in the past. This workshop has opened my eyes to the pre-production phase of a film or short film. The director puts together the storyboard and needs to be aware of the visuals, where the sound is coming from, the tone of the music, diegetic or non-diegetic and what music is associated with the characters. Another interesting thing I found out was that in nature "low sounds suggest danger or death". Also, the prison in the movie is a character and has its own theme music.

Workshop: Rock band Navarone as an example of creative entrepreneurship. By Robin Assen.
In this workshop, Robin talked about his experience as a drummer in his band Navarone. One crucial piece of advice he gave us was to know the business side of what you are doing. Also, Networking is extremely important. From my understanding, it seems as though we need to compromise a little to move forward or open more doors. Joining The Voice of Holland was an enormous step for this band, and it was not quite in their music area. But to have more opportunities in the future, you need to "sell yourself a little". "If you want a high-quality life you have to invest a high-quality investment". If you work hard and believe in what your idea/story/thing is then others will understand it more. Lastly, networking is vital. I need to build a network and manage my own social media. That way my brand will be consistent.
