ECF Day 6 - Choosing focus & building a sustainable business

Thursday 21st February 2019

Pitching our idea
This morning my team and I pitched our product idea to a panel and the class. We are called Octophonics because we are group 8 and our product idea is called "Jarity". We polished up our idea yesterday and planned who was going to say what and when. We were the last time to pitch and we received positive feedback from the panel and from our peers. I worked on the video and when I finished editing it, I gave it to my teammate Joey to edit the audio. It was a learning experience working with a sound editor for a project. Normally I do everything myself but don't spend much time on the audio because of my limited knowledge. I was conscious of the deadline and having my part complete, with plenty of time left, so that I could give it to Joey.

When every team pitched their idea, one of the panelist gave us a short lecture on "Entrepreneurship through Acquisition."

Lex Van Teeffelen stressed the important of defending your idea and that there are "four paradigms" that you need to lead your company":

Knowledge
Motivation
Capabilities
Characteristics

He also mentioned something about young people bringing in new ideas and social media. The rest of the talk was irrelevant to me because I don't have any family members that are entrepreneurs so there is no way I could take over the family business. I do agree that young people can bring new ideas. I know in my family, a lot of the older generations are more traditional because of their upbringing. It would be wise to hear a fresh approach. It might also be a good idea to listen to children because they have active imaginations and question the world and love to say"why not". If you have a mad idea, why shouldn't it be successful? How do you know if you won't at least try.

Art corner
Before going on this trip we were told about the art corners and I couldn't think of anything "cool" to show off. Yes, I have loads of media projects that I could have talk about and I went on Erasmus, but there was something in the back of my mind that I really wanted to do. I sing a lot at home and my bathroom is my own Broadway show. However I don't sing in front of anyone. Just the family members I live with. Last semester I worked on this project called Steps towards Change and it was about animals that are endanger because of climate change. When I was working on this project I randomly wrote this song when I was washing my hair. For some reason that's when I get most of my ideas.
Last night I decided, okay, I'm going to sign up for an Art corner. I will regret it if I don't. I messaged Lesley and asked if there was a free spot. I got a message today saying that there might be. When I walked into the classroom after lunch, Lesley came up to me and asked was I ready present. I think my voice went up a couple of octaves when I told him, "Yeah! Sure! I just need a minute to warm up outside the class". I quickly left the class and warmed up my voice just to make sure I didn't sound like a frog. Ten minutes later I was shaking and back in my seat. I did it! I sang in front of 50+ people. My theory was if I could sing in front of all these people, I will never again be nervous about a simple presentation. It's proved to be working so far.

Attended a lecture: Small Business Financing
Roderick Udo presented this lecture and it was certainly educational. I have blurry memories of my accounting classes in secondary school. It's been a while since I looked at a balance sheet. One important lesson Rod told us was that when you start a company you need to add a bit of cash for unexpected expenses. Also if want an investor to invest in your product, they are only interested in how much money you'll make them. Additionally you will have to pay interest back. Rod talked about crowd funding as well. For my FYP we wrote a business document and said that we would use Kickstarter to start a crowd funding campaign. Now I don't think it's a good idea. When you look on Kickstarter, you can see how much money the products have received. I wonder how much they actually get in the end because I now realize that they have to pay the platform back. Also if people invest in your crowd funding campaign, they expect something back. That could put pressure on you if you have to create all of them by hand. I think for the time being, if I do start my own business I will go to family, friends and my own pocket.
"Finance is about sustainability partnership".
"Entrepreneurship is all about Networking".

Attended a lecture: Publicity for little or no money
Emmett Coffey presented this lecture on promotion and publicity. As a media student, I understand the importance of using social media to promote your product. Most social media platforms are free. You can upload content on all of them for free. We live in a digital age where pretty much everyone is on some form of social media. In my case I'm on all of them and I'm active on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn. I use social media to promote my projects. I even have an online portfolio. Emmett made the point of standing out. You need to create your own news or be the news. Emmett talked about Brand Purpose which, according to google, "a powerful brand purpose sets out how a company intends to change the world for the better." "Its role is to unite customers and culture alike in the pursuit of that intention." I believe that all of our product ideas have a brand purpose because the common theme throughout all of them is "sustainability". We are all trying to help people or the environment.

Group task
My team and I were drained from the long day of lectures. As the team leader I organized who was going to write what section of the document tomorrow. It was a bit challenging because some members were clear on what sections they did not want to write but wouldn't tell me what they did want to write. In the end I managed to divide it out amongst the 6 of us and then we left to go get food before the concert.

Attended ECF concert presented by NMH
I adored this concert! Music has the ability to manipulate your emotions and take you on a journey. With each piece I imagined characters and a story. Music is universal and it was truly a magical experience.
