Group presentations (pitches of business ideas)
Yesterday my team and I brainstormed many ideas. At first, it was a slow process, but once we started, the ideas started flowing. In the end, we had to narrow it down for today's pitches. This was the largest team I have ever worked with, and it was clear from the start that some members were a lot more chatty than others. The Irish especially! There were times I needed to change the subject back to the project just so we could get a bit more work done. I tried my best to make sure everyone was heard and was able to give their opinion on the ideas.
The pitch
We were the first team to pitch, and I was the first person to talk. I'm working on my presentation skills because I do get nervous. Usually, when I get nervous when presenting, I start talking faster. I tried to slow my speech down because I knew English is not everyone's first language. However, my nerves were showing because I spoke too fast and needed to repeat my idea after. I did receive good feedback on the idea. Public speaking is something I'm working on.
Attended a lecture: How to establish value chains
This lecture was taught by Andreas Sonnig from the Academy of Music in Finland. Mr Sonnig used a lot of musical metaphors during his talk, and I have very little music knowledge, so I interpreted it in my own way. Looking at the talent around you and networking is essential. Everyone can bring something different to the table, and with the various skills and backgrounds, something intriguing can be created. Intercultural communication and respect for one another are crucial. When he said this, I was uncertain what he meant by intercultural communication. After the class, I googled the meaning. With "Intercultural communication" there are two types: Verbal communication and non-verbal communication. Verbal is with words, and non-verbal is with gestures. Basically, it means being aware of other cultures, customs and having respect for others. My team consists of four different nationalities. That's four different cultures, and it's important to be respectful of all of them. Additionally, it's a good idea to be aware of the different cultures around you. Lastly, your product needs to have value. How will it help others? What context will it be placed in?
Attended a lecture: Main project: Next steps & deliverables
One key thing I took away from this talk was that your choice of words is fundamental. Connecting with others is vital, and you need to communicate with them on an emotional level.
Group Task: Utrecht Cycling Culture Video
My group and I explored the streets of Utrecht to interview some Dutch about cycling. As the filming director, I was given the task of approaching people and interviewing them. It was a little daunting going up to strangers but incredibly educational. I've travelled a lot in my lifetime, but I have never randomly gone up to the locals and ask them about their culture. This might be an exciting filming project in the future. I love hearing people stories and learning about their cultures. It was amazing to listen to their cycling stories and getting a glimpse of their culture.
